| Comments | : | My wife is Flemish and from Gent, Belgium. We met
several years ago and fell madly in love which we still are. She is fluent in six
languages (Flemish (Dutch), her native language, French, German, English, Swedish,
and Spanish). I unfortunately, only learned English. I think it is a great misfortune
that children in the United States are not forced to learn a second or even third
language. It would be so much better if they did. In today's global society, being
multilingual is a distinct asset, and all children should be encouraged to learn
several different languages. Even though most of my in-laws speak English and other
languages as does my wife, I desperately want to learn Dutch so I can converse with
them in their native language and not force them or expect them to speak mine. If
they could learn English, the least I can do is learn Dutch. Additionally, in a
few years I will be retiring and plan to live half of the year in Belgium and the
other ha! lf in the US, so learning Dutch will also help me in my day to day activities when living in Belgium. |
